Storytelling Tips:

  • It takes TWO MINUTES for the average person to read ONE PAGE of double-spaced, 12pt text. Please try to keep stories under ten minutes (5 or fewer pages of double-spaced text)
  • Use facial expression, tone, and body language to enhance your performance
  • Go over your story and make notes for where to pause, breathe, make a sound effect, or otherwise embellish your performance

Telling Scary Stories

Take a listen to some of these chilling tales and then ask yourself:

  • What did the teller do with their voice? Did they change volume for effect? Did they do different voices for different characters?
  • What details were important to setting the creepy, uneasy tone of the stories?
  • What aspects of the setting, characters, or adjectives used helped build a sense of terror?
  • Do you notice anything in common between these stories, things all of the authors or tellers do?
  • What made the stories scary to you? Could you thread those same attributes into a story of your own?
