Using Search Engines and Databases to Identify Research Articles

Google Scholar is a powerful search engine that allows you to find peer-reviewed articles online.

Once you have identified an article via Google Scholar, you may be able to access the article online via Google.  If not, you can check the library for full-text access.  We advise students never to pay for PDF downloads! The library will almost always be able provide you with the article free of charge.  Here's how to find full-text online using the library's resources:

WorldCat

If no full-text is available via Google Scholar, try searching for the article title in the library's online catalog, WorldCat Discovery.  You can copy and paste the article title into the Title field of WorldCat's Advanced Search.

Find Journals by Title

Another way to search for a specific article is to locate the journal in which it was published. You can do this using the library's Find a Journal tool:

In the results, choose one of the Library databases listed to search for the article online:

Finally, if you cannot locate the article online, you can place an Interlibrary Loan request.  Find the article's WorldCat Discovery listing and use the orange button labeled "Request Item through Interlibrary Loan."
