MLA Citation Guide New Edition

The 8th edition of the MLA handbook officially highlights principles over prescriptive practices.

MLA use the concept of "containers" The first container is the item source itself. The second container (when used) gives the database, URL, web page or other source.

IMPORTANT: This guide is designed to simplify the often complicating issues of "containers"

To do this we follow an EXAMPLES model.

Changes from previous editions:

  • MLA 8 uses the concept of "containers" The first container is the item source itself. The second container (when used) gives the database, URL, web page or other source
  • Commas are used instead of periods between publisher, date, and pagination
  • City of publication has been dropped
  • Medium information is no longer necessary
  • DOIs should be used instead of URLs when available
  • Use of the phrase “Accessed” date is optional
  • "n.d." is no longer used for no date. Just leave out this "non-information"
