Choose a Topic

  • Figure out what you're writing about!
  • A good place to start is to consider the parameters of your assignment.
    • What is it looking for?
    • What is your professor looking for?
  • Recognize keywords relevant to your question
    • Figuring these out will help with your search!
  • Look into background information
    • Familiarize yourself with the topic on a general level before going too in-depth
    • Google and Wikipedia are not bad places to start!
      • Just make sure you use what you learn here as the beginning leading to more credible sources

Search for Sources

  • You have options when it comes to looking for sources:
    • The databases
    • Utica University Library's catalog
    • Academic Journals
  • When it comes to picking out materials:
    • Narrow your search using the available filters
      • You may want to filter by:
        • Language
        • Publishing date
        • Availability
    • Look at the available information on the source:
      • The title
      • The subjects and keywords used
      • The abstract
  • If a source looks interesting, but it's not available, you can always try to request it through interlibrary loan

Evaluate Sources

  • Once you find your sources, it's important to determine their credibility
  • Ask questions about your source and find the answers
    • Who is the audience for this piece?
    • Who is the author?
    • What is the editorial review process?
      • Academic resources are often peer-reviewed
      • Commercial/Popular resources will often have professional editors
    • Do they cite their sources?
      • Academic articles do
      • Commercial/Popular articles often don't
  • There are other methods to determine credibility, too
  • Consider potential bias within your source

Citations

  • Familiarize yourself with your citation style
    • For Construction Management, you will be using APA 7th Edition
    • Go to the Library Resources tab on this site or use our APA 7 guide to learn more
