Introduction to Library Research

BEFORE YOU READ THE ARTICLE!!!

Do not read every article you find interesting on the databases. This could take up your time with articles that end up not being as relevant to your topic.

Here are the steps you should take BEFORE you read the whole article:

  • Narrow your search
    • Make sure you are using those filters so the articles stay relevant to your topic
    • A good search result would have between 40-400 results
      • This isn't 100% every time but it is a good guideline
  • Read the Titles
    • Look at the titles. Is it interesting? Open it in a new tab
  • Look at the Subject-Terms, Keywords, and Author-Supplied Keywords.
    • Are there words you didn't use while searching that you would like to?
    • Are there Keywords that make you realize it isn't going in the direction you imagined?
  • Read the Abstract
    • This is usually about a paragraph long that summarizes what is looked at in-depth in the article.

ONCE you have done that and found articles that you want to read in full, you can start reading the articles!
